Other surgeons performing labiaplasty may only trim the labia, or use other techniques that can result in misshapen vaginal lips or worse: loss of sensation or pain. By contrast, Dr. Ennis’ surgical technique employs state-of-the-art surgical methodology to remove small flaps from the labia tissue, reducing the size of the labia minora (the inner lips) and greatly improving the vaginal appearance while at the same time preserving vaginal sensation. The most common technique used by Dr. Ennis is the Posterior Wedge Approach, which not only maintains the sensation but typically has a pleasing cosmetic result as well. What to Expect During Your Consultation

During your consultation, you will first speak to Dr. Ennis’s nurse and express any concerns you may have. Dr. Ennis will then go over the generalities of the procedure with you, showing you before-and-after photos of typical results seen from a labiaplasty procedure. Only after you have had this conversation with Dr. Ennis will his nurse have you change and you can show him your exact concerns and he will discuss a specialized treatment plan tailored just for you and your specific concerns.

What Happens During a Labiaplasty Procedure?

The entire labiaplasty procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is typically completed in about an hour. The patient is placed under a light general anesthesia so that there is no discomfort. Excess skin and tissue is trimmed from the inner or outer labia in a manner tailored to each individual patient, and the incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures. Patients are advised to make plans to have someone drive them home from surgery and stay with them for the first 24 hours.

What Can You Expect During Recovery?

Patients can expect some swelling and bruising of the labia and vaginal area for the few days following surgery. There may also be some numbness, which generally lasts a couple of weeks but can last longer for some patients. Dr. Ennis prescribes pain medication to relieve any physical discomfort during the recovery period. It is important to be up and walking the next day.

Patients should refrain from having sex and wearing tampons for at least six weeks. Light exercise, including light lifting, can be resumed as soon as two to three weeks after surgery. Most patients can return to work within a week. Dr. Ennis will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure that the healing process is progressing properly.

Genital Cosmetic Surgeries Often Combined with Labiaplasty

What causes enlarged labia, and how can I fix this problem?

Often, labia can become enlarged, misshapen and/or stretched out due to hormones, the aging process or childbirth, but most often it is simply genetic. Labiaplasty is a surgery that fixes this problem by tailoring the excess skin and fat off the inner or outer labia and then reshaping the remaining skin to a more pleasing and comfortable shape.

Will having labiaplasty enhance my sensitivity during sexual intercourse?

Women who have labiaplasty to remove their excess labia skin often find that intercourse is more pleasurable because their labia no longer impedes vaginal and clitoral stimulation, especially when combined with a hoodectomy.

Does the labiaplasty procedure hurt?

This increases friction during intercourse, which heightens sexual arousal for both partners.
