Breast Reduction Incision Types

Details of the Breast Reduction Procedure

The breast reduction procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and generally takes between one and three hours to perform, depending on patient’s anatomy. Based on the amount of breast tissue and ptosis (sagging) present, Dr. Ennis will perform the procedure using one of two incision patterns, the keyhole incision (around the areola and down the center of the breast) or the anchor incision (a keyhole incision pattern with an added horizontal incision along the breast crease). The procedure used will depend on the amount of skin and breast tissue that needs to be removed.

From one of these incision points, the doctor will remove excess breast tissue and skin and then reshape the remaining breast tissue. The nipple and areola typically remain attached during surgery, so the nipple sensation is typically preserved. Dr. Ennis will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures and place a soft surgical bra over the breasts at the end of the procedure.

Recovering from Breast Reduction Surgery

It is not uncommon for patients to experience swelling and bruising on their breasts immediately after surgery. Any discomfort can be relieved by taking pain medication prescribed by the doctor. Dr. Ennis does not recommend taking aspirin or ibuprofen for the first week, as these medications may increase the risk of bleeding.

Patients should sleep with their upper body elevated in order to help reduce swelling. They should also avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds for the first week after surgery. Most breast reduction patients are able to return to office work one to two weeks following surgery, and to moderate exercise (though no lifting or chest exercises) after two weeks. Strenuous exercise can be resumed after six weeks. Smoking is absolutely prohibited the few weeks before and after surgery, as it will interfere with the healing process.
