If there’s one word that’s captured the beauty world the past couple of years, it’s contouring. The desire to to create and emphasize natural shadows in the face, giving a more defined profile and appearance. Celebrity makeup artists highlight and contour to completely transform the look of bone structure. As the desire for a more sculpted face grows, so do the inquiries on permanent buccal fat pad removal according to award-winning, double board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Scott Ennis.
“Round, chubby cheeks can be cute in childhood and even into adulthood, but some people don’t wish to carry their baby face into adulthood,” observes Dr. Ennis.
The buccal fat pads naturally sit in the upper portion of the cheek and are designed to help us suckle as an infant. Some people never lose this fat pocket and typically, in these patients, the jawline still looks nice, but they have the “chipmunk cheeks” also knows as the buccal fat pad.

“With makeup contouring you are giving shape to an area of the face and enhancing the facial structure through makeup, bronzers, luminizers and the like,” said Dr. Ennis. “Buccal Fat Pad removal essentially does a permanent version of this by removing the extra fat for a smoother, sculpted facial silhouette.”
Additionally in facelift patients, the buccal fat pads are an often-overlooked portion of the facial aging process. As we get older, the buccal fat pad descends into the jowl, giving the face a tired look.
“I often see patients from outside facilities who have had a facelift and they present stating ‘their jowls are back’,” said Dr. Ennis. “The previous surgeon did not address the buccal fat pads when performing the facial surgery.”
Buccal fat pads can be identified by pushing up on this small area just above the jawline and then releasing. The skin will fall rapidly back into place, but you will typically see the fat pad descend back into the jowl slowly over 2- or 3-seconds as it refills this area. This is indicative of a sliding buccal fat pad.
The buccal fat pads are removed through a small incision inside the mouth. Recovery is typically quick with minimal bruising. For more information, please contact Dr. L. Scott Ennis, by visiting www.EnnisMD.com.
