Are pesky fat bulges on your body that will just not go away preventing you from achieving the body you desire? If you’ve tried every combination of diet and exercise and you still have stubborn fat pockets clinging to your body, the liposuction procedure was created for people like you.
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; it is designed to correct problem areas. Both men and women have benefited from the slimming, smoothing effects of liposuction. Trouble areas such as the hips, thighs and back are often where troublesome fat rolls reside in women. For men, the stomach, love handles and hips are also often trouble areas, and even has their own nickname — “spare tire” — because it is such a common problem.

Think about plastic surgery procedures in the following way. If the skin of our body is the container and the fat is the volume, then there are really only two things we can do: we can adjust the volume or we can adjust the container. That being said, procedures such as face lifts, breast lifts and tummy ticks are all geared at tightening the container or the skin of our body. Breast implants add volume and liposuction takes volume away.
When liposuction is performed and the fat is removed, we rely on the skin to tighten up to this smaller volume. Some areas work better than others. Women’s breast skin and stomach skin is designed to be pregnant so that it can relax when a woman goes through puberty and again through pregnancies. Women also often have excess fat on the stomach, but due to their lack of skin elasticity in that area, liposuction can be difficult and they are often better off having a tummy tuck procedure to remove excess stomach fat and tighten the loose skin and muscles. However, liposuction works great on a woman’s’ back, hips, and thighs as these areas have much better skin elasticity and will tighten back up nicely after the fat is removed.
Liposuction also works well in men, giving them that tighter, trimmer look and exposing those abs hidden under that persistent abdominal fat. In men, the skin of the abdomen is much thicker and will typically tighten up nicely after liposuction. A liposuction procedure is ideal for removing excess fat from the body, reducing its volume and giving the patient a sleeker, more toned body contour.

The tumescent liposuction method uses a large volume of anesthetic fluid that is injected into the treatment area. This fluid is effective in two ways: it numbs the area while it makes the fat in the area swell, allowing the doctor to remove fat from the area with ease and precision, as well as minimal bleeding.
Ultrasonic liposuction is a method that uses ultrasound waves that liquefy the fat, and then easily remove it from the treatment area.
Mechanically-assisted (Power-assisted) liposuction
This liposuction method combines the tumescent liposuction procedure with a very small mechanically-powered cannula (the thin, hollow tube used to suction out the fat). This allows for small amounts of fat to be removed rather than the larger, bulky cannulas that leave lumps and bumps under the skin. These tiny cannulas allow Dr. Ennis to precisely contour the area to achieve those perfect curves. This is one of Dr. Ennis’ preferred methods for performing liposuction.
The laser liposuction method uses a laser beam to emulsify the fat cells in the treatment area before it is suctioned out of the body. Laser lipo may be beneficial in small areas, but generally does not work well for larger areas.
If you are considering having a liposuction treatment to re-shape your body, you might be a good candidate if you:
Liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia so that the patient is asleep throughout the treatment, as well as a local anesthetic in the treatment area. The doctor will inject a large amount of anesthetic (tumescent) fluid in the area being treated. He will then make small incisions surrounding the area and, for ultrasonic or laser liposuction, insert either an ultrasonic or laser probe to liquefy the fat cells in the area. A tiny cannula is then inserted through each of the incision points; the power-assisted cannulas will then gently remove the unwanted fat cells and contour the problem area, after which the doctor will use sutures to close the incisions.

For the first few days of the recovery period, the patient wears a compression garment. The patient will then exchange this garment for a softer support garment (such as Spanx™) that will be worn for several weeks. The support garment is made so that the patient can perform normal daily activities, such as going to the bathroom, with relative ease and without taking the garment off. The support garment should also be worn while bathing for the first several days, and can be patted dry or blown dry with a hair dryer. After the first several days, the patient can take the garment on and off for bathing.
It is important that the patient is mobile as soon as possible after surgery, as this will aid in circulation and help bring swelling down. Light walking is recommended. The patient will likely experience a measure of discomfort for the first week after treatment, and can use the pain medication prescribed by the doctor for relief. Most patients can drive a week after surgery (provided they have stopped taking pain medication), and can return to office work after one week. Light exercising can be resumed after two weeks.
Some results of a liposuction procedure can be seen right away, though the body contour will continue to get trimmer gradually over the subsequent weeks. It is usually at the six-month mark when the patient can expect to see the final results of surgery: a sleeker, more toned-looking physique!
To maintain long-lasting results, it’s important to remember that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure! Although it will correct problem areas, the patient must continue a healthy lifestyle and continue a routine exercise program!
