From Soft to Sculpted
Do you want the freedom of going shirtless on a hot day — without embarrassment? Would you like to walk, exercise and participate in sports without feeling self-conscious about jiggly fat on your chest? Do your friends give you a hard time about your “man boobs”? If you are a man with extra fat on your chest, you’re not alone. An estimated 60 percent of all men have excess male breast tissue, or gynecomastia, at some level. The cause of this condition is largely unknown, though factors like hormonal changes, obesity and using certain medications may contribute to it.
Dr. Ennis can help you go from a soft, feminine-looking chest to a more sculpted chest appearance through his male breast reduction procedure. This procedure removes excess breast tissue and fat from the male chest, achieving a more masculine-looking contour. In most men, the skin will shrink and tighten on its own, but on occasion, extra skin will also need to be removed.

Are You a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
You might be a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery if you:
- Are in good health, with no medical conditions
- Are at least 18 years old
- Have extra breast fat, causing puffy or jiggly “man boobs”
- Are at a healthy, stable weight
- Have firm and elastic skin
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Male breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately one to two hours to complete. The doctor will make a small incision at the bottom of the nipple and then remove the excess fat with a small cannula and, if need be, remove any extra breast tissue. Once the extra breast tissue is removed, Dr. Ennis will sculpt the remaining tissue for a pleasing, natural-looking chest contour. The small incisions at the base of the nipple will be closed with dissolvable sutures.
On a rare occasion, Dr. Ennis will also trim excess skin from the breast and tighten the remaining skin for a smooth chest. Fortunately for most men, however, the elasticity in the skin is good enough that skin will not need to be removed, and the associated scars can be avoided.
The Male Breast Reduction Recovery Period
As this is an outpatient procedure, the patient will return home the day of surgery. In the rare cases where a significant amount of tissue was removed, the patient will have drains in each breast for the drainage of excess fluids. Dr. Ennis will remove these drains on a follow-up visit a day or two after surgery.
Patients can expect to have swelling and bruising on their chest for two to three weeks post-surgery. Discomfort can be managed with pain medication prescribed by the doctor. To help manage the appearance of scars, sun exposure and tanning beds should be avoided for six months, and an SPF with a minimum of 30 should be applied to the chest until the scar completely fades.
Patients can typically return to a sedentary job after one week, and two weeks for a more physically demanding job. Moderate exercise (excluding weight lifting) can be resumed after two to three weeks. Chest and back exercises and weight lifting should be avoided for at least six weeks.
